Hi folks, got back last week after a fast 6 day trip to Utah. Spent 2/3rds of the trip hiking in the parks in the south and then drove to Vernal to see what's up around the ranch. I made 3 visits to the front gate (party central, beer bottles 2 dozen+ lying in and out the fence). 2 visits were in daylight, 1 about 3:00 am. Didn't see anything. I did talk to some fellows in a coffee shop about Vernal, hiking, etc. One had an interesting story. He never heard about the ranch but had a UFO sighting with his wife. They live in Vernal, were coming home late at night (1 year ago) on a motorcycle. Both saw a bright light in the sky that hung till they got close and then went around 2 miles (in 3 seconds), stopped dead and then climbed till it disappeared. Looking at this guy's eye's while he was telling me this, I could see it was coming from the heart.

Thanks for the update, William. Hope you had a good time on your vacation. It's too bad people are flinging beer bottles all over the property. Some people are just plain disrespectful and stupid. How long did you stay at the Ranch when you went at 3:00 am? Did you see any dogs protecting the property?

I didn't stay too long, just stopped by for a visit on my way to Salt Lake from Vernal, had a morning flight out. It was kind of creepy walking around the car in the dark, the sky was full of stars. That last house you pass before the gate, does have a dog that will chase your car for a short way. That's the only dog I saw. I wanted to drive that Red Cloud Loop north of Vernal (that's around Dry Fork), but a good part is unpaved and was very muddy. My rental started to slide, so a passed on that. I checked out the "Remember The Maine" park. I couldn't find how Gus B. (he had that story about strange things going on when he hiked into the woods after a wedding reception there) got into the woods/hills. There was a river separating it from the park. Maybe it was dry in '03.

That is horrible people are doing that. I'm glad you found it OK. It seems like the stars are so bright and close from the ranch. Maybe next time you will be able to stay longer.

Yea, I remember reading where George Knapp said the area outside the fence is becoming a weekend party zone. I would like to know the status of the Ranch. Last I heard NIDS/Bigelow still owns it. There's definitely someone still in the house, a truck parked outside was moved each time I went. I wonder if whoever's there, has any stories?

Nids still own it. Last I heard a older couple are staying there. I would love to talk with them to see what they have to say. Did the dog chase you on the way in or out? Glad to hear its still doing his job. Did you notice anything hanging on the fence?

It chased both ways, not during the night visit though. The only thing I saw on the fence was the "no trespassing" "keep out" signs on the gate. I think I found another gate (beer bottles all around), just north of the last neighbor, there's a short dirt road to it. You can walk along the fence perimeter for a good distance and climb some hills. The only thing I saw that caught my eye was a wood stake marking a spot on a hill just outside the fence. Couldn't find a reason for this. There was nothing written on it. It didn't look like a survey point, because there was no bend in the fence or property lines. ? I could see from the hill, another car that drove along the road to the main gate, turned around and left.

Was it a black dog? I have never walk back that way. Was that during the day or night that you walked? Next time I'm out there I'll try it. What did you think of Northestern Utah? I hear that its growing.
Thanks for sharing your vacation! |

It was a black dog. I did the walk during an afternoon, with a little rain. NE Utah was nice, as it was last year. I did notice a large amount of oil people in Vernal. I was told about that by my hotel before I arrived. Hated to see that the main fossil building at Dinosaur National Monument has closed for good. This was due to some foundation problems and the money to fix it is probably going to Iraq.
