My grandmother, who died in 1958 at the age of 82, experienced numerous manifestations of the supernatural. One she told me about took place when she was a young girl living in small town in western Sweden.
She was walking home past a cemetery and decided to take some fresh flowers which someone had left on a grave. Arriving home she showed them to her mother, who was shocked and fearful.
"You took those off a grave in the cemetery, didn't you?" she asked anxiously. Grandmother denied it, but her mother said, "Look! See how the spiirits have marked you!" She pointed to Grandmother's bicep, which now bore large bruiese in the shape of fingerprints, as if someone had pinched her arm violently.
She broke down and confessed, and her mother told her she must hurry back to the graveyard and put the flowers back where she found them. Grandmother did so, despite feeling no pain from what looked like very severe bruises.
Arriving back in the presence of her mother, she was shown the now complete lack of bruises on her arm.
She told me that she never took flowers from a grave again, and for the record, neither have I.
I mean, I never have wanted to, but if I did, well, this would have dissuaded me. |
